The Problem With Profiting Off Of Sexism In Games

Long-time commenter davidlosangeles has a smart comment on the nature of sexism and racism in society in the thread to the last post on Star Wars: The Old Republic and the violence toward women found in that game:
Sexism is like racism, it is not principally about the thought inside of someone?s head, whether they ?like? or ?dislike? black people, it is about what actions they take. Racism in this country is a political and economic system of privileges which favor white people over black people. There were no doubt plenty of white people who do not dislike black people in their hearts at all but were perfectly willing to support and defend Jim Crow laws and practices. Senator Strom Thurmond was a virulent defender of racism but treated his own illegitimate black daughter with great kindness and thoughtfulness (although he never publicly acknowledged her). Gov. George Wallace began his career as a moderate supporter of civil rights for black people until he was defeated by John Patterson in Alabama?s Democratic gubernatorial primary election in 1958. Mr. Wallace had the support of the NAACP while his Democratic opponent was endorsed by the KKK. After this, whatever Mr. Wallace?s personal thoughts may have been, he became a public and vocal advocate of racism. Years later he again reversed his position and publicly apologized for his support of racism. What these men thought in their heads or felt in their hearts mattered naught in the world, it was their political actions that was everything.
